Year 5&6 Bassenthwaite Lake

Welcome to Bassenthwaite! We are a mixed Year 5 and 6 class, full of excitement and readiness to learn. Our teacher, Miss Poole, and other adults in the room such as Mrs Collins and Mrs Raine ensure that our learning is fun and that we are always challenged in new ways.

This term, we have kick-started our learning with our Brazil topic, immersing ourselves in all things about the country, culture and the amazing Amazon rainforest! Our class texts, ‘Journey to the River Sea’ and ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ help to give us a deeper insight as to what it may be like to live in such a tropical, exotic place.

In Bassenthwaite, we recognise that reading leads to succeeding and read at any opportunity we can. To provide us with a little encouragement, we have a series of reading challenges on-going throughout the year such as the Minion Reading Race, whereby we gain points for reading with adults and the Autumn Reading Challenge, which motivates us to read a variety of different genres, not forgetting magazines and newspapers!

We recognise the importance of the 5R’s (resilience, resourcefulness, relationships, reflectiveness and risk taking) in order to help us become independent, resilient and happy learners and have so far demonstrated that we support our friends around us to help achieve these.

This is what we are most looking forward to about the year:

Thomas: ‘Learning new, exciting things’

Grace: ‘Making new friends and learning more about people

Robert: ‘Challenging myself in new ways!’

And, on top of all of this, we have a range of exciting trips, events and topics waiting to be discovered… let the fun begin!
