Elterwater

Learning is fun and fantastic in Elterwater. This term we have worked with the local bee keepers on a 'Save Our Bees Project.'  War and Peace is our curricular theme. Visiting Lowther has been a highlight where we tasted food from that era and re-enacted life as it would have been in the trenches. Our class book has been Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo, which has made us very reflective with regard to the life of those in 1914. As a class we have written letters, poems, and will soon be writing biographies.

Tim Rylands and Alan Gibbons both visited school. Tim Rylands showed us some fantastic ICT resources. Alan Gibbons a great author, did some shared writing with us. We were in the Trenches. Some of the vocabulary used was fantastic. Alan's message is keep it real!! We are typing up our writing for everyone to read.

We have established a great link with Wordsworth Bookshop , they came in last Tuesday and did us a book fair. We have put in the school order and the books will be in shortly. There were many Alan Gibbons books on display. We look forward to reading them.

Year 5 and 6 are great representatives, we enjoy extending our learning in the wider community. We attended the remembrance service in town on Wednesday November 7th at St Andrew's church. It was a very poignant time and gave us an opportunity to think about those who had made the ultimate sacrifice. Our school councillors laid a poppy wreathe. We discussed names on the war memorials and walked back to school via Castle Park where we thought about those who had died in the Boer War. As a class we are researching the 1911 census to research families to who those soldiers belonged and to get an idea as to their lifes in 1911.

We love to be creative...as a class we are taking more risks with our learning. Music is enjoyed by us all , we all play the Clarinet or flute and love to sing!! Art and drama are real favourites. We will soon be rehearsing for the school pantomime!! Great!! Those of us in the choir will be performing at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland on Friday 16th November for Children in Need!! Look for us in front of the fountain!

Our year 6s last Thursday attended the careers convention at Ullswater Community College. They were great ambassadors and really joined in the interactive activities. Particular favourites were the Police display where as detectives we had to solve a crime, an engineering stand where construction had to be done and the hairdressing and make up stand where some original creations came about!!  As a year group we are looking forward to our Penrith Museum trip on the 20th and 27th November and to Carlisle Archives on 3rd December. Wow aren't we lucky!!

We have done so much this term. Our class are a great bunch of individuals, welcoming, interesting and full of talent. We have great sportsman, actors, dancers, cooks writers, singers, musicians, chess players, readers,  the list goes on.

Our Christmas Fayre is on November 29th. Our year 6 get to help - we are all looking forward to that!!  Watch this space!!
