ELT Penrith Museum History Visit (Nov 21)

This term, Year 3 and 4 have been learning all about the Anglo-Saxons and were lucky enough to go on class visits to the Penrith and Eden Museum to find out more.   There, we met Karen and Rebecca (museum curators) who let us explore the artefacts which they keep there, and shared lots of exciting facts with us too.

When we were inside the museum, we had the chance to get involved in a range of different activities. After learning about the Anglo-Saxon letters, we were able to write our own names in runes. It was really  interesting to see how different they are to the letters which we use today! Everyone enjoyed trying on the armour, helmet and shield which the curators showed us. We felt like real Anglo-Saxons preparing for battle!   We also learnt about some archaeological digs which took place just outside of Penrith and got to look at some jewellery which was similar to what would have been found there.

When we got back to school, we even got to carry on the fun by making our own Anglo-Saxon style brooches. We worked hard to decorate them with traditional patterns and rune designs. We all had a great time and we hope that we can visit the museum again one day!
