Year 6 constructed a bird hide in June. Prior to this they designed and carried out a bird survey. They discovered where the birds congregated and the number of birds that visited the trees. Year 6 also surveyed the different sizes of bird so that bird box holes could vary.
Gareth Thomas led the project. He brought hazel and bamboo. We learned to use all of the essential tools to cut and knock wood into the ground. Then we had to weave the hazel and bamboo.
The wood had to be sorted into different sizes. Then the willow had to be stripped. Others in the group had to construct the different size bird boxes and then choose the different trees on which to put them.
Finally willow was planted to the side of the Hide so that any bird watchers could be concealed carefully. A busy but fascinating day!
