BAS Summer Update (July 2021)

What a busy summer term we have had in Bassenthwaite class! Children have enjoyed all of the sporting opportunities that they have taken part in this term. We have bounced, danced, passed and run! However, the class’s favourite sport opportunity had to be the Wheelchair Basketball. Mia said, “It was really fun to engage in a new sport,” and Nathan enjoyed the fact that you could crash into each other.

Our topic this term has been Rainforests, and we have loved reading “The Explorer” by Katherine Rundell. Children have created fact files about Brazil, and have learnt about Brazil’s location in the world. We have been using atlases and iPads to help us locate other countries that also have rainforest in them. This topic has also lead nicely into creating some gorgeous pieces of artwork inspired by Henri Rouseau, which children have taken great pride in producing.

As scientists in Bassenthwaite, we have been exploring and investigating all about Electricity. We have been making many circuits and have used our knowledge to help us fix problems. This has also linked to our focus of becoming an Eco-School, with children making suggestions of cleaner ways to source our electricity. As part of our Eco-School Week in the Spring term, we loved taking part in the NFU Live Lessons, seeing chicks hatch and lambs being born!

It has been a very busy but memorable final term for the Year 6 children in Bassenthwaite, and I would like to wish them all the best on their new journeys at secondary school. Before we finish, here are just a few comments from the children to sum up their final year at North Lakes School.

Jamie – “The year has been very enjoyable! My favourite moment was Sports Day because we could be out together as a full school again.”

Luwen – “It has been a fun year. I loved the wheelchair basketball and Miss Swinbank’s engagement party where I dressed up as a bride!”

Whitney – “It has been fun, enjoyable but also tiring. I have really enjoyed all of the different sporting experiences, especially the wheelchair basketball.”

Andra – “Year 6 has been great! We have done lots of fun things. I really enjoyed Sports Day because it got everyone excited.”
