Sainsbury's Eco & Bakery Visit (Feb 2013)

This term, Rydal Water and Elterwater have visited Sainsbury's Penrith to explore how they look after the environment. Everyone was amazed to find out that there is very little waste from the store:

All cardboard is recycled;
They have reduced packaging on lots of products;
The heat given off from the fridges is used to heat the store;
Special shutters are used at night to keep the cold air in the fridges;
Solar panels on the roof heat water and provide power;
LED lights can dim depending upon how much natural light is coming in through the sky lights;
Card and packaging is used in the biomass boilers to heat the store;
Food waste is sent to Wetheriggs Animal Rescue Centre;
Recyclable carrier bags are used;
Rainwater collected on the roof used in the toilets.

We also found out about how The Lakes Free Range Egg Company was 'Eco' friendly as well. Our visits were complete once we had visited the in store Bakery where we found out all about bread making, the different equipment used and most importantly we got to sample some tasty treats!
