RYD Summer Update (July 2021)

Rydal Water has had an exciting Summer Term with lots of great learning experiences and opportunities.  Our project this term has been the Ancient Maya and Rainforests; we have enjoyed reading our class novel, ‘The Explorer’ which was set in the rainforest.  We have based our writing around the novel by Katherine Randell and have written short stories and informal letters.

Back at the start of term, we began an Eco Project where we joined some online sessions with the NFU (National Farmers Union).  During these sessions, we experienced lambs being born, chicks hatching and took a trip to Vet School – it was very exciting and interesting!  In addition, we explored climate change and started our own war against plastic by making planters for the fence next to our bubble.  We grew some seeds and Mr Soulsby’s mum also grew some other plants for us to brighten up our patio area.  The area is just starting to bloom now and we have a rota for watering them.  We also designed and made our own reusable cotton bag to take home.

Another highlight of the term has been some fantastic PE opportunities with Boogie Bounce and Razz Dance.   We have really enjoyed our science work where we have explored electricity and have made circuits and Dragon Flies!

We are a musical class and we have loved learning this year’s Sing Up Day song – ‘We are Unstoppable!’  We even went live on Facebook on Sing Up Day – did you catch us?  We have also developed our ‘Boomwhacker Orchestra’ with Mrs Tuffin and have performed songs such as ‘In the Jungle’ and ‘Hall of the Mountain King’.

Computing has been very exciting this term and we have become experts on the iPads at Garage Band.  Our task was to create a sound track using loops – we even surprised ourselves and can’t wait to apply this skill when doing other projects.  Lately we have been ‘Makers’ and have been using our iPads to control Micro:Bits which are tiny little computers.  We have also become Internet Legends with a special task to create a trophy at home with our parents.

Many members of Rydal have enjoyed a special lunchtime Code Club with Miss Swinbank - thank you Miss Swinbank!  Our Maths has really flourished this term; our TTRS statuses have blossomed and our recall time is increasing all of the time.  We have also won the Cumbria Sumdog Contest TWICE!

We have really enjoyed our time in Rydal Water – it has had its Covid-19 ups and downs but we worked really well together, even when we were learning remotely.  We have enjoyed working in Bubble D and would like to say thankyou to Mrs Sewell, Miss Swinbank, Miss Ridley and Mr Hart!

We are excited for Y6 and look forward to things being a little more normal!
