Cumbria School Games Tennis (July 2014)

For the fourth year running now North Lakes has qualified to represent Eden at Cumbria School Games, a major sporting event.  This year we were chosen to play in the Tennis Tournaments in July.

Back in April, six squads of 4 players (comprising of 2 girls and 2 boys) walked to Penrith Tennis club to compete in the Eden Tennis Tournament. We had huge success, with three of our teams making the semi finals, along with many individual successes. Finally at then end of a jam-packed afternoon, our Squad 2 finished joint first with a squad from Stainton School, receiving medals for a superb performance. Mrs Greenwood was so proud of the achievements of these great sporting ambassadors for NLS. Following this, Harvey F, Ollie G, Maddy B and Daisy then went on to represent Eden at the Cumbria School Games in Bitts Park in Carlisle.

The day began with an opening ceremony at Carlisle Sands Centre. Many schools from across the county gathered to represent their area in a number of different sporting activities such as Tri Golf, Hockey, Orienteering and Tennis. There were also disabled athletes competing and showing their talents too. It was lovely to meet up with ex pupils who are now at UCC and watch them competing in the disabled part of the competition.

We were entertained by Robbie Dee and many other celebrity guests were invited such as British Olympic skating star David King, sports minister Helen Grant, comedians 118 and the Lord Mayor of Carlisle.

All athletes and sport players then went off around Carlisle to play their different sport competitions. We played at the Tennis Courts in Bitts Park. It was a hot day, so shade was needed and we played several games with some success as a team and some great individual performances from the squad.

The games closed with a presentation ceremony before our journey back home to Penrith. Carlisle was the overall winning district with Eden taking a fantastic third place. Visit the Active Cumbria website to view pictures of the day.

Mrs Greenwood thanked her team for all for the incredible effort they had put into the competition, just missing out on a place in the semi finals.
