Geography Curriculum at North Lakes School

At North Lakes School, a maintained Community Junior School in Penrith, we are proud to offer a Geography curriculum that inspires curiosity and a deep understanding of the world around us. Our Geography teaching reflects our school’s vision: “A caring school community, where everyone can grow, learn and adapt for the future to achieve personal success.” Through Geography, we nurture pupils’ sense of wonder and equip them with the knowledge and skills to understand and engage with the changing world.

Intent

Geography at North Lakes School is designed to provide a rich and inclusive learning experience that supports every pupil — including those with SEND and Pupil Premium — to reach their potential. We believe Geography is a vital subject that connects disciplines and helps pupils understand both physical and human processes shaping our planet.

Our curriculum aims to:

  • Develop knowledge of globally significant places, their physical and human characteristics, and their interconnections.
  • Foster understanding of key geographical processes and how these cause spatial variation and change over time.
  • Build competence in geographical skills such as data collection, analysis, map reading, and communication.
  • Encourage a sense of responsibility for the environment and an informed concern for sustainable development.
  • Promote appreciation of our local area and its resources, alongside global citizenship.

This approach directly supports our mission to broaden horizons and widen opportunities for all through a deep and meaningful curriculum, delivered by a motivated and inspirational team.

Implementation

How We Teach Geography

Our Geography curriculum is structured around four key areas:

1. Locational Knowledge
Pupils learn to locate continents, countries, and cities, understanding environmental regions and key physical and human features. They explore concepts such as latitude, longitude, time zones, and significant geographical markers.

2. Place Knowledge
Children compare geographical similarities and differences by studying regions within the UK, Europe, and the Americas, helping them appreciate diverse places and cultures.

3. Human and Physical Geography
We cover key topics such as climate zones, biomes, rivers, mountains, settlements, land use, and natural resource distribution, linking physical and human geography.

4. Geographical Skills and Fieldwork
Pupils develop practical skills using maps, atlases, globes, and digital tools. Fieldwork in the local area helps them observe and record features, supporting hands-on learning and real-world enquiry.

Our curriculum planning follows a four-year cycle with detailed Knowledge Organisers that build on prior learning, helping pupils transfer knowledge to long-term memory. These organisers also highlight key vocabulary and link Geography to other subjects, fostering a broad and connected understanding.

Climate Change: A Core Theme

Recognising the urgent environmental challenges of our time, climate change is embedded throughout our Geography curriculum. Pupils explore the causes and effects of climate change at local, national, and global levels. Through enquiry-based learning and real-world case studies, children develop critical thinking about sustainability, biodiversity, and environmental stewardship. This empowers them to become informed global citizens who care deeply about protecting our planet.

Impact

Assessment and Continuous Improvement

We continually assess pupils’ understanding through unit quizzes and ongoing teacher feedback. This helps staff identify strengths and areas for improvement, ensuring teaching is tailored to meet the needs of all pupils. Our Geography Subject Leader uses this data to support staff development and enhance curriculum planning, reflecting our commitment to high-quality teaching of a deep and rich curriculum.

Connecting with Our Vision and Values

At North Lakes School, Geography is more than just a subject; it is a means to build strong relationships with our community and broaden children’s horizons in an inclusive environment. We celebrate diversity by integrating local contexts and global perspectives, ensuring every pupil feels valued and supported. Our curriculum encourages children to grow in knowledge and character, preparing them to adapt and succeed in the future.
