North Lakes School Mathematics Curriculum

At North Lakes School, our Mathematics curriculum aims to provide every child with a secure, confident and deep understanding of mathematical concepts. We want pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and curiosity needed to use mathematics effectively in school and in the wider world.

Intent

Our intent is to ensure that all children:

  • Build strong fluency in number and calculation

  • Develop clear and logical reasoning skills

  • Apply their understanding through rich problem‑solving opportunities

  • Make meaningful connections across mathematical strands

  • Grow into resilient, confident mathematicians with a positive attitude towards challenge

We follow the National Curriculum aims to ensure children become fluent, reason mathematically and solve problems across all areas of maths, including:

Number • Fractions • Shape & Space • Measure • Statistics • Calculation

Implementation

Mathematics is taught daily in every year group, with lessons carefully sequenced to build on prior learning and deepen understanding.

Power Maths – Mastery Approach

North Lakes School follows the DfE‑approved Power Maths scheme, which is built on mastery principles. This ensures:

  • A clear, progressive structure across all year groups

  • Small, carefully sequenced steps to secure deep understanding

  • Opportunities for exploration, discussion and reasoning

  • Consistent use of models, images and manipulatives

  • A focus on understanding before procedure

Children are supported through practical resources, technology and visual representations that help them make mathematical connections and apply learning to real-life contexts.

Daily Maths Structure

Daily Maths Lesson

Every class receives a full daily mathematics lesson tailored to their year group, following the Power Maths progression.

Fluency Sessions

  • Years 3–5: A daily 10‑minute Mastering Number session to strengthen number sense and reasoning

  • Year 6: A daily ‘Keeping Skills Sharp’ session to maintain fluency and accuracy in calculation

Weekly Arithmetic

All year groups take part in a weekly arithmetic lesson focused on teaching and reinforcing efficient strategies and accurate calculation.

Digital Fluency Practice

Children regularly use number‑fluency apps to reinforce key facts including: Sumdog and Times

Tables Rock Stars (TTRS)

Assessment & Tracking

Progress is closely monitored using:

  • Active Learn software

  • Class mark books

  • Termly targets for every child

  • A range of targeted interventions to support and challenge learners

This ensures every child is supported to stay on track and make strong progress.

Family Maths Engagement

North Lakes participates in the National Numeracy Family Maths Toolkit Scrapbook — a creative, hands‑on initiative designed to help families enjoy maths together.

The scrapbook encourages:

  • Fun, practical maths activities at home

  • Problem‑solving and discussion

  • Positive attitudes towards mathematics

  • Real‑life maths exploration for children aged 4–13

This approach strengthens home‑school partnerships and builds mathematical confidence for both children and families.

Impact

Our Mathematics curriculum ensures that children leave North Lakes School as:

  • Fluent and confident mathematicians

  • Skilled problem‑solvers who can apply knowledge in new contexts

  • Logical thinkers who can reason clearly and explain their ideas

  • Resilient learners who embrace challenge

  • Independent, reflective and ready for the demands of KS3

Children develop not only strong mathematical skills but also the mindset and confidence needed to succeed in the next stage of their education and in everyday life.
