Pupils enjoy coming to school, they feel cared for and know that staff will look after them.

"We treat people how we would like to be treated"

North Lakes School is a brilliant and nurturing school community in Penrith, Cumbria, where 7 to 11-year-old children can enjoy lessons, have fun, build friendships and be encouraged by our excellent team of teachers. At North Lakes, we put our children's needs first and ensure our school is fully equipped to educate for success — whatever that may be.

  • We have interactive plasma screens, great Wifi, 160 iPads and a class set of Chromebooks!
  • We have an exciting big playing field, an astroturf pitch and an adventure trail.
  • We have lots of visitors, and we enjoy learning in lots of different ways.
  • We learn together in classes about exciting things.
  • We have six classes in school and a Resource Provision.
  • We are happy to be part of North Lakes School and feel safe.

Pupil voice groups

As part of our Global Development plan, we have eight pupil voice groups across the whole school.

Our groups include:

  • Health and Well-being
  • Positivity
  • Environment 1 and 2
  • Community 1 and 2
  • Reuse and Recycle
  • Mini Police

We meet every half-term and discuss the things that 'bother us'. We then decide what we can do to change these 'bothers' and we put our ideas into actions! This year we have established a healthy tuck shop, designed and delivered cards to our neighbours and local community, made and sold bath salts in recycled jars and displayed positive wordsearches in our school environment. The Positivity Group were excited to share their positivity by purchasing ice lollies for the whole school. Our Environmental groups have been developing the school grounds and are working on building an edible garden to increase our lunch offer!

Food and meals

At North Lakes you can pay online for school meals such as roast dinner, pizza, meatballs, lasagne and more. You could also bring a healthy packed lunch in a named box. No fizzy drinks, crisps or chocolate, please. We eat in the school hall and have split lunchtimes.

PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE A NUT FREE SCHOOL!

Clubs and sports

We have all sorts of after-school clubs, and we have great school teams which compete in many sports, like rugby, netball, cricket, football, tennis, hockey and gymnastics.

We also have a very talented school choir!

Golden rules

We have some Golden Rules to follow in school that help us to learn together happily and to stay safe. Our most important Golden Rule is: We treat others how we would like to be treated!

School uniform

Our uniform is an important part of our school, and we wear it every school day. Our uniform shows that we belong together, and when we look smart it means that we are keen to learn and do well.

We wear:

  • A purple sweatshirt
  • A white polo shirt
  • Grey or black trousers or leggings
  • Black shoes or plain black trainers
  • White T-shirt for PE
  • Black shorts or leggings for PE
  • A tracksuit for outdoor PE
  • Trainers for PE
  • A warm coat for playtime
Enrichment Opportunities

At North Lake School we know that enrichment opportunities create lasting memories for all children and have a positive impact on children's learning. We understand that children need to have experiences to enable them to form their own beliefs about the world around them.

Therefore, we offer opportunities wherever possible that enable our children to gain meaningful experiences and hands-on learning opportunities beyond the classroom. This includes: outdoor experiences that incorporate team building skills, water activities and forest schools; access to the arts including theatre and gallery visits, dance competitions and music workshops; and we are part of the Eden Valley Sports Partnership, competing in sporting events from football to gymnastics, Panathlons to lacrosse and we even enjoy Dodgeball and golf!

Years 3 and 4 participate in outdoor days, including learning to paddle board and kayak, whilst our year 5 children are given the opportunity to attend residential visits to build on these outdoor experiences. In year 6, children attend a city residential to Edinburgh and York to give them an understanding of urban life outside the Lake District.

We also welcome visitors to our school to broaden our children's knowledge and to offer 'rich experiences' with real-life musicians, artists, historians, scientists, engineers and even celebrities! We are proud to be the host school for 'Aim High', welcoming authors into school to deliver workshops termly.

The 5Rs and building learning power

To build our learning power we think about five special animals who teach us about the '5Rs'.

  1. We try not to give up, like a PENGUIN, that is always RESILIENT.
  2. We try new things like a BEE, which is a RISK TAKER.
  3. Like a SPIDER, we try to think of our own ideas, and join up the ideas we have to be RESOURCEFUL.
  4. We think carefully about what we have learned, like an OWL, who is REFLECTIVE.
  5. And like an ELEPHANT, we work hard at our RELATIONSHIPS, getting on with others around us.
