All teachers have written guidelines to help them to identify any children who may be either gifted (within core curriculum areas, English or Maths) or talented (usually in other subject areas such as Art, Sport or Music). A check list helps teachers, along with discussion with other colleagues, to judge the degree of an individual child’s ability or talent. Children found to be exceptionally able will have their needs met, by and large, within the normal classroom setting. The work set by the class teacher will be planned to extend and challenge them. Teachers across a year group may also plan to group able children from more than one class so that they can gain stimulation and motivation from the whole group.
