Tullie House Border Reivers Day (Jan 2016)
This term, as part of our Border Reivers topic, Year 5&6 visited Tullie House and Carlisle Cathedral.
At the cathedral we are shown around by Ron who had a wealth of knowledge about the history of the building. We learnt all about the Black Canons who originally lived in the cathedral nearly 1000 years ago.
We used our Philosophy skills to create questions for Ron which really impressed him. We then toured the cathedral, learning all about its history and admiring this fantastic, huge building.
At Tullie House we took part in many different workshops where we were aiming to learn more about how museums work and the jobs of the employees so that we could set up our own museum back at school. During the day we handled many precious artefacts and had to wear special gloves to protect them from the oil on our skin. We had the opportunity to tour the different galleries and we evaluated the displays as well as interviewing staff who work there to find out more about their jobs!
Everyone really enjoyed exploring all of the different galleries, dressing up, exploring, playing games and using the interactive exhibits. We handled some real Border Reiver artefacts and learned more about them from the staff.
Kieran has been working hard on his project with Mrs Mitchelhill whilst recovering from his stay in hospital and he has received some great model kit from Warbases in Dunfermline - thankyou!
Our very own mini museum opened at the end of this term for one day only. We will put into practice all of the ideas we gained from visiting Tullie House – we hope you all enjoyed visiting it.
