Carlisle Archives Centre (Dec 2012)

The Archive visit at the start of December was memorable, with Dawn Hurton organising a fantastic day of events. It was a day of two parts! We took ourselves back to the 1940s, studying War World 2 and evacuation.

We were able to look at original documents from this era and the rules and regulations regarding this whole process. We made evacuee dolls, attaching identification labels, a ration book, an identification card and a gas mask.

We learned how little evacuees could take with them and how they informed their parents by post as to where they were. During this session we role played leaving our homes, catching trains and eventually being placed with foster parents. It was a very reflective session.

The Royal British Legion sent several volunteers who made presentations. The members of the Royal British Legion: Mr Tony Parrini, evacuees, Lieutenant Colonel M.R Rowney MBE, Queen’s Guards, Mr Robbie Reid Sinclair, founder member of the Aviation museum at Carlisle Museum and Mr Reid Sinclair, Arctic Convoy experiences of his father during World War 2. Between them, these brave men gave us a great insight into their differing experiences during World War 2.

They particularly made us aware of the sacrifices so many people made, especially the children who were not able to live at home with their loved ones. Thanks you to all - we had a marvellous day.
